Edible Food Recovery

Edible Food Recovery

Our team rescues edible food that would otherwise be discarded from local grocery stores each week in partnership with Second Harvest of Silicon Valley.

Through this effort, we recover more than 150,000 pounds of food each year from participating grocery or wholesale markets throughout our community. Once the food is brought back to our site, it is sorted, quality-checked, and made available to our Corps community in our community market. This helps ensure that food can end up on household tables instead of in the landfill.

Our work in food rescue is strengthened through our partnership with the California Climate Action Corps, a national service program led by California Volunteers, Office of the Governor, and implemented by Bay Area Community Resources. Climate Action Corps fellows work closely with SJCC+CS staff and corpsmembers to support every stage of the process - from coordinating grocery store pickups, to preparing and organizing food for distribution, to welcoming and assisting community members during market hours. Their service plays a vital role in expanding the reach and reliability of our food rescue program while building a culture of environmental stewardship and community resilience.

Together, these partnerships allow us to divert significant amounts of edible food from waste streams and reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with disposal.
