Reducing Food Waste to Fight Climate Change

Fellows

Our California Climate Action Corps fellows rescue edible food that would otherwise be discarded from local grocery stores each week.

Through this effort, we recover more than 150,000 pounds of food each year from participating grocery or wholesale markets throughout our community. Once the food is brought back to our campus, it is sorted, quality-checked, and made available to corpsmembers in our free community market. This helps ensure that food ends up on household tables instead of in the landfill!

Our fellows also reduce food waste by creating compost.

Composting is nature’s way of recycling. It's a rewarding way to turn your fruit, vegetable, and yard trimmings into a nutritious soil amendment that benefits the environment.

Compost is also a key tool in the fight against climate change! Compost benefits the climate in a few different ways, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions at landfills, promoting the uptake of carbon dioxide by vegetation, and making our gardens more resilient to the effects of climate change.

Hear from our California Climate Action Corps fellows in the video below about their experience and learn about all the ways we reduce food waste, from food rescue to composting.
